Sarah Eves
Sarah’s work in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) has been largely informed by her own identity and lived experience as a queer, neurodivergent person. Sarah is both interested and involved in the transformation of organizations, systems, and communities – moving them towards effective removal of barriers and strengthening understandings of prejudice, unconscious bias, stereotypes, and oppression. Sarah is a life-long learner, activist and advocate who has a history of working with various organizations to advance gender equity and accessibility, among other EDI areas. She believes that as much as continuous learning is important, continuous “unlearning” is a meaningful – and necessary – part of impactful EDI progress.
Sarah hails from Wolfe Island (Kawehnóhkwes tsi kawè:note), the largest island of the Thousand Islands. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree, with a focus in Psychology, from Queen’s University, and an Advanced Diploma in Business Administration, Human Resources, from St. Lawrence College. Currently, Sarah volunteers as an Advisory Board Member (Human Resources) with the Kingston Arts Council (KAC) and works as an independent consultant for not-for-profit organizations and small businesses in the region.
Sarah is passionate about building connections – creating dynamic platforms for engagement, and directly working with marginalized individuals and communities. With over 15 years of community engagement and event organizing experience, she is skilled in cultivating relationships across diverse communities by finding shared common ground, identifying strengths in differences, and strategizing for successful navigation of challenging, but essential, conversations.
Sarah’s approach to and understanding of compliance – as a foundation for stability and growth in any organization – has been shaped by her background in human resources in combination with work for a variety of start-ups. Through her experience in recruitment & selection, onboarding, training & facilitation, supervision, health & safety, policy & procedure development, and record keeping, she has played an integral role in workplace compliance endeavors. Sarah also has experience in health & safety compliance initiatives, including emergency management planning and fire safety planning. Her education in qualitative & quantitative research methodology, advanced statistics (for the behavioral sciences) mixed with her experience in communications and graphic design, lend themselves well to compiling reports and presenting data through an engaging, story-telling lens.
In her spare time, Sarah enjoys learning new skills, reading voraciously, kayaking, hiking, writing poetry, watching documentaries, listening to music, spending time with friends & family, and supporting local arts & culture events.
